Throughout the years, King's Hawaiian has initiated numerous programs not necessarily in an effort to be good eco-citizens, but mostly because it was the right thing to do. Every inspiring reduction in paper, plastic and energy is part of this effort.
Sometimes even little things can have a big impact. King's Hawaiian decided to reduce the thickness of the plastic bags they use from two thousandths of an inch to one-and-a-half thousands of an inch. It doesn't sound like much, but the volume of plastic resin needed for packaging was reduced by a minimum of 122,000 pounds of resin annually. The reduced volume also eliminated the need of 4.5 trucks for deliveries and more than 2,500 gallons in diesel fuel annually. This fleet recently earned the Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay Transport Partner mark for its exemplary environmental performance.
Some initiatives have bigger numbers associated with them. King's Hawaiian's recycling system processes nearly a ton of corrugated cardboard material daily. The very same cardboard is then recycled into 100% post consumer waste shipping materials. In addition, King's Hawaiian changed to an alternative ECT cardboard liner, which eliminated the harvesting of 1,150 trees annually.
Throughout the bread production line, any excess dough is carefully collected and reused to feed area livestock throughout California and Arizona, furthering livestock and agricultural resources.
King's Hawaiian has gone far beyond industry requirements with shipping, recycling, and eco-friendly cleaning materials. Even the corporate offices adhere to strict recycling policies. The family's original commitment to renew and replenish is alive and well.
