In the 1950’s, Robert Taira traveled across the Pacific to the warm islands of Hawaii. After graduating at the top of his class at baking school, Robert borrowed $382 from his father and opened his very first bakery in Hilo. Robert’s Bakery was the birthplace of his famous Original Recipe King’s Hawaiian Sweet Bread.

Nearly a decade later, Robert moved his well-known bakery to King’s Street in Honolulu. King’s Bakery quickly turned into a hub for locals and tourists. Many visitors from the mainland shipped the bread home as gifts for their friends and family.

In the late seventies, Robert traveled to California with the goal to share his authentic Hawaiian heritage and taste with those living on the mainland. In 1977, he constructed a 30,000 square foot commercial bakery and the Original Recipe Sweet Bread was found in kitchens throughout the United States.

Robert opened a family style bakery and restaurant in Torrance, California that served a combination of his legendary confections and original Hawaiian fare. After 50 years of baking signature recipes, King’s Hawaiian continues to introduce new products and gain much deserved aloha.

To keep up with growing demand, an additional 40,000 square feet was added to the company’s Torrance bakery on Normandie Avenue. But, that was only the beginning. Further expansions, new restaurants and new products were rising to the surface.

In 2001, a new fully automated 150,000 square foot baking facility and corporate headquarters was built in Torrance, California. The Local Place Bakery & Café opened their doors in 2002, offering the same great Hawaiian style cuisine in a quick “on-the-go” style. Today, you can find King’s Hawaiian products in a variety of local grocers and restaurants across the United States.
